A vertical milling column is the quickest way to add milling and drilling capability to your Sherline lathe. For the 4000-series lathes with plain handwheels, the P/N 3050 column is the appropriate choice. If you have a 4400- or 4500-series lathe with adjustable zero handwheels, you will probably want the 3480 vertical milling column with the same type handwheel for only $16.00 more. You can also upgrade to near the capability of the 2000 mill by adding the multi-direction column P/N 3580.
Adding the column to your lathe is quite easy and can be done in less than 30 seconds. Just release the set screw that holds the headstock/motor unit in place and lift it off the pin. With the alignment key in place on the lathe, set the mill column over the same pin and tighten the set screw in the column base. Now slide the headstock/motor unit over the pin on the mill column saddle, making sure the alignment key is in place and tighten the headstock set screw. You are now ready to check alignment and get to work on small milling jobs.
Keep in mind that the 6" long by 5/8" thick table on the lathe is not as big as the standard 13" x 7/8" mill table, but if your setups are small, this should not be a problem. There is plenty of room for a mill vise or chuck for smaller jobs. If you find you need to mount larger setups like the rotary table or tilting angle table, you can always order the longer 13" mill table—it goes on the lathe saddle the same way it does on the mill saddle, although you will have to go back to the shorter table when you convert back to lathe mode because of the extra thickness of the mill table. Your cutting tool would be 1/4" above center. (The optional 13" mill crosslide table assembly with leadscrew and handwheel is P/N 4088X (inch) or 4088XM (metric).
